Ananda struck back with a vengeance to defend their low score of 140 by having Nalanda fighting with their backs to the wall at 99 for 7 when play ended on day one of their 80th Battle of the Maroons played at the SSC ground yesterday.

First the Anandians had a bad run against the Nalanda skipper and leg spinner Nipun Karunanayake who finished with figures of 6 for 30 to have their high riding opponents for only 140 runs in their first innings.

Not to be outdone, Anandians who have twelve outrights to their credit unleashed their spin wizard Matheesha Perera who so far has over a century of scalps against his name and wound a spell round the bewildered Nalanda batsmen had them reeling at 99 for 7 at close. Matheesha was ably assisted by Sachitra Perera. Incidentally both bowlers finished with identical figures of 18-7-27-3.
