Preparing a generation

By Madhushala Senaratne

Being a pathbreaker is not just about having the ability answer a few questions. And that’s what this season’s winner of Pathbreakers Kushan Felix (17) discovered. We caught up with Kushan who shared with us his experiences.

Pathbreakers season II, titled Pathbreakers Aspirations Conquest, a programme taking a television quiz plus reality TV show format ended last December with six youngsters battling it out in the final episode. After some gruelling rounds of questioning, Kushan, from St. Peter’s College, emerged the winner.

Presented by Aspirations Education (Pvt) Ltd and produced by Vanguard Management Services (Pvt.) Ltd / ETV, season II of Pathbreakers, featured 11 episodes. The show started off with 50 school going boys and girls competing against each other over a series of team challenges, all of which were designed to test their knowledge and skills. Ten students were selected to the second round where they had to acquire points and out of this, six were selected for the finals.

“It all started when a team from Aspirations Education came to our school and told us about Pathbreakers,” says Kushan, adding that he applied along with a friend and was then selected after an aptitude test and interview. The team tasks in the first round was rather interesting and taught him a lot about working with others, especially some of them he had never met before.

“Overall, this was a really good learning experience. I learnt to work with others in a team, to be open to society and I also gained a lot of knowledge of various issues and developed analytical skills that would no doubt help me later on in life,” says Kushan.

Kushan adds that he had to face some tough competition. “But, we grew into be one big family, especially in the second round where it was just the 10 of us for quite a few weeks. We got to know each other so well and we were always there for each other,” he says.

As the winner of Pathbreakers, Kushan had the opportunity to tour universities in Malaysia and Singapore. Currently studying Maths for his Advanced Level examinations next year, Kushan says he was very interested in the courses in engineering and this is something he looked for when he toured the universities.

“The tour to these universities was extremely useful and beneficial to me. I got to know more about some of the universities in Malaysia and Singapore, the courses they offer and the facilities that are available for us,” he says.

Next on the agenda for Kushan is his A/Ls, but he’s got one last thing to say. “I wish to thank the team from Aspirations Education who made this a success, the team from ETV, my family, friends, school mates, teachers and also a big thank you to all my team mates and competitors. It was a great experience and to all you people out there, do make use of the opportunity.”

Well folks, not to worry. As the team from Aspirations Education reminds me, await Pathbreakers season III. Pathbreakers was sponsored by Navitas, while the print media partner is The Sunday Times.
