Cuisine with a view

By Natasha Fernandopulle, Pix by M. A. Pushpa Kumara

The range of food is varied and of course delicious but the view is what is magnificent – what I am talking about is the Flag & Whistle Restaurant and Pub.

When entering the restaurant, the sensation is one of boarding a ship because of the view of the harbour from the restaurant, which is located smack in the middle of the commercial capital of the country. While dining on their sumptuous dishes you have the chance of having a fabulous view of the ships entering and leaving the harbour. This is all due to the restaurant being located on the fifth floor of the Setmil Building.

Now let’s get down to business... Let’s talk about the food, which was why we came here in the first place. Well, there are a number of appetizers, soups and salads, while the main courses range from Sri Lankan to Western cuisine, vegetarians need not fear either due to the variety of vegetarian dishes that Flag & Whistle’s chefs can prepare for you.

And for pasta lovers, do keep these in mind: Fettuccine with Spicy Vegetables, Chicken ala Carbonara, Chicken Cacciatore and Prawn Napolitana. And if seafood is what you are looking for why not give their range of seafood dishes a try? Of which the best option would be the Seafood Platter which includes battered prawns, cuttlefish, grilled sear fish, baked or chilli crab along with french-fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce – and this, I must say, is delicious and a meal in itself. These aside you can even try their chicken, pork, steak and grill and rice dishes as well. Flag & Whistle also has a number of snacks along with burgers and sandwiches to choose from.

And when it comes to desserts, you can try out either one of the following: Baked Alaska, Hot Brownies, Pavlova, Tiramisu and Fruit Salad. In terms of beverages, you have the option of a number of juices as well as alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.

The main restaurant is spacious, however, the cosy VIP room to which you are taken to, in an old elevator is possibly one the best ways to enjoy a romantic evening at the restaurant. It is suggested that you make reservations ahead and the VIP room can even be booked for meetings or functions.
Make note: prices are reasonable and portions are quite filling while the restaurant is clean and the service is friendly and efficient.

With Valentine’s Day around the corner this romantic location in Colombo might be just the place for you and your partner to be at. The Flag & Whistle Restaurant and Pub is open from 11 am to 2pm and from 5 – 11pm from Monday to Sunday. They are located at Setmil Building, 5th Floor, 256, Srimath Ramanathan Mawatha, Colombo 15 and can be contacted on 248 5500/1.
