Bar-hopping Bard finds his muse!

This month StageLight&Magic Inc., will stage the world premiere of Hamlet at Elsie's Bar, a musical comedy about the Bard himself.

The play is all about William Shakespeare's attempt to break out of a severe case of writer's block. We find Shakespeare spending most of his time at his favourite drinking hole; Elsie's Bar with his good friends and contemporaries - Ben Jonson, Christopher Marlowe and John Donne, trying to find his muse.

Owned by Osric, Elsie's Bar is in its heyday, attracting a regular set of people from varied walks of life. Osric is assisted at the bar by his wife Ophelia and son Horatio, while his brother Claude works as the bartender with Rosie Crantz and Gilda Stern, the two waitresses.Shakespeare's lack of creativity is a hot topic at the bar, with his most recent writing attempts being complete failures. Two love triangles and a drinking duel later coupled with the famous 'play within a play' concept gives Shakespeare the inspiration to start writing a play called 'Hamlet - Prince of Lichtenstein'. Several strokes of genius and many drinks later, 'Hamlet - Prince of Denmark' is complete.

The entire play is set to music and features a live band, promising an evening of great entertainment. Directed by Feroze Kamardeen and produced by Sirraj Abdul Hameed, the music is handled by Ranil Gunawardane along with vocal director, Dilan Irulgalbandara.

Hamlet at Elsie's Bar will have an eight-day run from February 20 - March 1, at the Lionel Wendt. The play's main sponsor is Dialog TV. EFM is the electronic media partner while The Sunday Times and the Daily Mirror are the print media sponsors. The play is also supported by Leo Burnett Solutions Inc, the Yamaha Music Centre, Firefly and Speitra WT.
