May peace doves fly over our skies

On 4th February 1948
Ceylon gained Independence
From British 'chains'
The event fresh in my mind
Is the grand celebration
On the first occasion
In our fresh green ties
As smart school kids
Proudly we marched
In the Galle Face Esplanade!
Much water has flowed
Under the bridge
Although, the foe turned friend
We can't forget our freedom-fighters'
Or National Heroes
Who shed their blood
In fighting the British
To achieve Independence,
Above all these changes
Our attention is focused
On the thirty – year long war
Against 'terrorism' and 'separatism'
Now it's the 'tail-end'
That our brave sons are fighting,
Let us strew flowers on their way
And bless all sons
Of the Tri Forces and the Police
To free Mother Lanka
As one unitary Sri Lanka,
With all races under one banner!
May war and bloodshed end!
May peace and unity extend!
May peace doves fly
Over Sri Lankan Skies!
