Mohan Peiris is new Attorney General

President Mahinda Rajapaksa this week appointed Mohan Peiris, PC as the country's new Attorney General, just 24 hours after the Legal Officers' Association of the Attorney General's Department passed a resolution expressing their support for Acting Attorney General Priyasath Dep, PC.

Mohan Peiris: New AG

Mr. Peiris served in the Attorney General's Department before retiring from service to join the private Bar.
A spokesperson for the Legal Officers’Association told The Sunday Times said they were "shocked and outraged " at the appointment of Mr. Peiris since the Association was fully in support of Mr. Dep who had served the Department for over three decades. His substantive position was Solicitor General and he was made Acting Attorney General following the retirement of C.R.De Silva PC in October.

Mr. Peiris took his oaths before President Rajapaksa on Thursday, and assumed duties at his office the same afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Policy Alternatives has taken the appointment of the new Attorney General for a determination before the Supreme Court. The petitioners are opposing the appointment.
