Thirty six teams in CCC tourney

Thirty six teams divided into six groups will vie for honours in the Under 14 CCC International Invitation cricket tournament scheduled to get underway tomorrow in eight venues around the metropolis. This will be the fifth in the series which is played for the Nelson Mendis Challenge trophy.

The tournament this time too has attracted teams from the outstations including Anuradhapura, Matale and Kantale. Missing the tournament this time will be last years champion the Pakistan Customs Cricket Academy who pulled out at the last moment due to security situation prevailing in the country.

Nevertheless five foreign teams have confirmed their participation which includes three teams from India which are Tata Steel Cricket Academy from Kolkata, M&K Cricket Academy from Delhi and Raju’s Cricket Academy Hyderabad. Malaysian Malays Cricket Academy and Maldives Cricket Academy are the other two foreign teams.

A total number of 104 matches are down to be played including the semi final and final. The preliminary round matches will be played over 30 overs while the semi finals and the final will be of 45 overs duration. The champion team will receive the Nelson Mendis trophy with the runner up getting the CCC trophy. Man of the match awards will be presented from the pre-quarter finals onwards and there will also be a special trophy for the best disciplined team.

These will be presented at a glittering awards ceremony scheduled to be held on December 19 at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo with former Sri Lanka test captain Aravinda de Silva gracing the occasion as the chief guest.- MSA
