Burdett Trophy for RCGC - 106th Burdett Trophy 2008

Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) carried away the Burdett Trophy for the 61st time when they beat Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) in their 106th annual encounter worked off at the Royal Colombo Golf Club course yesterday.

The final score line read Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) - 7 points to Nuwara Eliya Golf Club’s - 5 points. In the foursome matches the encounter ended in a tie with both teams scoring 2 points each. In the 8 single matches Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) scored 5 points while the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club ended up with 3 points.

In the opening match of the foursome encounter Nuwara Eliya Golf Club’s Alain Gyi (4) and Glen Mathew (13) beat Mithun Perera (-3) and L.T.Samarawickrama of Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) I up. In the second match Bandula Weerasinghe (7) and Lalin Senadhira (10) of RCGC beat Nuwara Eliya GC’s Rohan J.Perera (14) and V.T. Sundaralingam (13) by 5/4.

In the third match Stewart Richie (0) and Sidath Wettimuny (10) of NEGC beat Sharon Fernando (5) and Manjula Chandrasoma (8) of RCGC by 4/3. In the last match of this foursome encounter S. Vairavanathan (7) and Avancka Herath (9) of RCGC beat NEGC’s K. Prabhagaran (0) and M. Balendran (12) by 3/2.
In the eight single matches RCGC represented by Rathvan De Livera, Damindra Fernando, S. Vairavanathan, Mithum Perera, S.T.B. Jayasinghe, Sheron Fernando, Bandula Weerasinghe and Mohan Ratnayake beat NEGC’s Glen Mathew, Rochen Perera, Rohan De Silva, Stewart Ritchie, Nihal Boralessa, K. Prabhagaran, Gihan Wickremasinghe and Alain Gyi. NEGC however had three wins with Glen Mathew, Rochen Perera and K. Prabhagaran emerging victorious.

In the 125th anniversary trophy RCGC obtained 81/2 points to NEGC’s 31/2 points. Nuwara Eliya Golf Club has won the Burdett Trophy on 28 occasions.
