SAARC women for Children’s Heart Project

One in four hundred Sri Lankan children suffer from chronic heart disease. Mindful of this fact, Habiba Anverally, the President of the SAARC Women’s Association decided that these children needed help.
“Something had to be done,” emphasized Prabha Nair Nagalingam, the project Coordinator of Colours of Indus, a fund-raising show. “The equipment and facilities are so desperately needed; and this need simply cannot be ignored.”

The SAARC Women’s Association- Sri Lanka Chapter, was formed in 1996 as an organization promoting cultural and social integration, friendship, harmony and better understanding between women in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The association consists of members of the SAARC regions, now resident in Sri Lanka, thus making the ties of friendship between these countries stronger. The association has active sister chapters in Pakistan, Bangladesh and India.

Each year, the President of the Association, in keeping with urgent charitable needs, would plan a project. The main objective is to bring women together. To further this objective, the association undertakes to raise funds through these cultural activities to assist a worthy charitable cause.

This year, the focus is on children suffering from heart disease. The funds for this purpose will be raised through the 2008 project titled “Colours of Indus”, an evening of music and cultural shows from the various SAARC countries.

This gala dinner event will be held on November 16 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo at 7 p.m. The proceeds from this fundraiser are earmarked towards the Children’s Heart Project of Sri Lanka- (headed by the eminent cardiologist Dr. P.N. Thenabadu), an approved charity.

Through this fund raiser, the association hopes to help CHP in equipping and improving hospitals, clinics, operating theatres and other facilities used in the diagnosis and treatment of CHD in Sri Lanka.
They also hope to provide financial assistance to children from financially challenged families requiring urgent intervention and having to seek private sector facilities in Sri Lanka.

The highlight of the evening will be a fashion show presented by one of Pakistan’s most innovative fashion icons- Ms. Tazeen Hasan who will present an exclusive collection of her signature clothing line. In addition to her contemporary styled and colourful fusion wear for all seasons she will also exhibit a range of clothes designed and created by her with fabric produced by her. This item will be choreographed by Jacqueline Mei, well known make-up artist and choreographer.

Colours of Indus will celebrate the cultural links this country enjoys with people of SAARC in Sri Lanka, through the throb of music from the sub continent.

Tickets for Colours of Indus, priced at Rs. 4000 (inclusive of dinner) will be available at Leather Collections, Colombo 3 (tel. 4505580) as well as with the members of the SAARC Women’s Association.
