Mr. Nanayakkara who has held several senior government positions had retired from government service in 1980, but was involved in conducting disciplinary inquiries in state institutions including the Police Headquarters, People’s Bank, Bank of Ceylon, the Railway Department and the National Hospital.

Police are investigating whether the motive for the killing could have been linked to an ongoing inquiry by him.

Initial police investigations revealed that the assailant had not removed any items from the house. The computer on which Mr. Nanayakkara had stored details pertaining to the inquiries, and the television set were on.

Mr. Nanayakkara had been living on his own, after his wife passed away, while his three children, all married, were living elsewhere.
