Customs investigates Rs 25 million bribe charge in Periceyl case

Days before the case involving Harry Jayawardena-controlled Stassen’s and Milford companies is to be taken up for hearing on August 29 before the Commercial High Court where three partners are battling against Mr. Jayawardena, Sri Lankan Customs has been informed of an alleged bribe of Rs.25 million given to an official to destroy the file or to change the HS code of the product imported by Periceyl imports.
There is an ongoing investigation of Periceyl, a Stassens-connected company, by Customs Department over duty payments. Last year Customs raided Stassen Exports Ltd to look for evidence pertaining to this investigation.

When contacted by The Sunday Times FT, Director General of Customs Sarath Jayathilake said he has already received a complaint on this matter and noted that it is a serious issue. He has been informed in writing about the payment of a bribe of Rs.25 million and attempts to destroy the files or to change the code. He added that he has directed the Post Clearance and Audit Branch to secure the file immediately and conduct prompt investigations into these allegations. He added that the Customs Department will take stern action against any persons for their involvement in corrupt practices..
