In the lap of jungle luxury
By Sanath Weerasuriya, Pix by Nilan Maligaspe

Yala National Park is one of the biggest attractions in the south. And after a lull following the security situation in the early part of the year, Yala is attracting visitors again.

The Elephant Reach Hotel on the outskirts of Yala is a comparatively new venture. Started in 2006, the hotel categorised as a ‘small luxury hotel’ has gained popularity among both local and foreign tourists.

Close to two popular tourist destinations – Yala National Park and Kirinda, Elephant Reach is an eco-getaway and private haven in the jungle. It has filled the vacuum created by the 2004 December tsunami devastation, for luxury accommodation sought by high-end adventure and nature travellers.

Owned and managed by Lanka Hotels and Travels, a subsidiary of Lanka Ice (Pvt) Limited, the new wing of the hotel, comprising 14 luxury rooms, was opened recently adding to its existing 21 rooms in luxury double chalets with a spa too in the offing. The hotel is strategically located on four acres close to religious and historical places of interest. In addition four of the most visited wildlife sanctuaries are within an hour’s drive. Yala is the closest while Bundala National Park and newly created Lunugamvehera are also close by. Uda Walawe is also about one hour’s drive from the hotel.

“Our chalets are well equipped with ultra modern conveniences including air conditioning, spacious bathroom with hot and cold water, hair dryer, 20" satellite TV, DVD player, fully stocked mini bar, digital safe, complimentary tea and coffee-making facilities etc that are bound to make a guest’s stay relaxing and pleasant,” said Director, Operations, Malinga Fernando. The chalets have open verandahs for guests to enjoy the picturesque vistas.

The hotel also welcomes families with children and has amenities including baby cots, and even baby-sitting facilities (on request). Another popular attraction is the kids’ play area, he adds.
