Security arrangements are being finalised for Aloka, the peace dog, who is set to take part in the Walk-for-Peace programme by Buddhist monks from the United States in
Sri Lanka, beginning next Tuesday.

Venerable Melpitiye Wimalakitthi Thera confirmed that the “peace dog,” which captured the hearts of  millions in the US during the monks’ 2,300-mile peace march across America, will participate in the programme. However, it remains uncertain whether Aloka will be able to join the walk in the same way as in the United States.

The monk noted that concerns have been raised about threats from stray dogs. He explained that Sri Lanka’s community dogs could start barking and disrupt the Walk-for-Peace.

To address these concerns, a meeting was held on Friday with security forces officers overseeing the programme. Ven. Wimalakitthi Thera assured that necessary precautions would be taken to ensure Aloka’s safety.

The Walk-for-Peace delegation, including Ven. Pannakara Thero and his chief incumbent, arrived in Sri Lanka on Friday. Their itinerary begins with a visit to the Attanagalla Maha Viharaya, followed by a bus journey to Anuradhapura, where they will receive a sapling from the Sri Maha Bodhiya before walking towards the Ruwanweli Maha Saya.

The Thera added that the peace walk would begin on Wednesday, covering the Dambulla to Matale stretch, and would conclude on April 28 at Independence Square, where a state ceremony would be held. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is expected to officially hand over the Bo sapling to the American delegation of monks.
