Colombo University emerges runner-up at Jean-Pictet Competition
View(s):The Faculty of Law of the Colombo University emerged runner-up in the 50th edition of the Jean-Pictet Competition, a prestigious international training event in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) held recently in Indonesia and Singapore.
The competition was won by the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA).
The event featured intense, role-play-based simulations of armed conflicts rather than traditional mooting, with the university emerging runners-up and Dulandi Gunasekera awarded best speaker.
The preliminary and semi-final rounds took place in Batam, Indonesia, while the team contested against USAFA in the finals at the National University of Singapore, in Singapore.
The team comprised Dulandi Gunasekera and Oshini Pilapitiya. Ms Gunasekera was awarded the Gilbert-Apollis Prize for Best Speaker, in recognition of outstanding individual presentations and the embodiment of the Pictet spirit.
The team was coached by Colombo Law Faculty alumni Thimanthi Jayasuriya and Asher Dias, while Kalindu Dharmapriya contributed to the team’s preparation.
The team thanked Prof Sampath Punchihewa, Dean of the Faculty, and Prof Naazima Kamardeen, Senior Treasurer of the Moot Court and Debating Society, for facilitating mooting and ensuring access to international competitions for law students of the
university.
This is the second time the institution emerged as runner-up at the competition, following its first success at the 44th edition in 2024, in Pokhara, Nepal.
