Founded in June 1972 by Huub Bals, the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) is one of the world’s most anticipated film events and among the largest audience-driven international film festivals globally. Renowned for its unwavering support of independent and art-house cinema, IFFR has long championed filmmakers from developing countries, offering a vital platform for bold and original voices.
Held annually at the end of January across multiple venues in the vibrant city of Rotterdam, the festival is guided by a mission to expand, enrich and challenge perspectives through film and audiovisual arts. Over the years, the festival has also extended significant support to Sri Lankan filmmakers and artistes, providing funding, development opportunities and international exposure that have amplified the global reach of their work.
IFFR actively nurtures emerging and adventurous talent through its industry platforms, including the CineMart co-production market, the Hubert Bals Fund, Rotterdam Lab and a range of other professional initiatives that continue to shape contemporary world cinema.
