It was a day of relaxed fun  –shopping and browsing  – as Local Lane, an innovative pop-up took place at the Bayleaf on Gregory’s Road last Saturday, January 31.

Local Lane was presented by Timeline, the ad agency headed by Imasha Fernando and Heshan Fernando, along with Pranavan Rockwood, a dynamic creative and interior decor specialist. Their aim was to create a space to highlight local entrepreneurship. Live music and food added to the vibe, kids enjoying a bouncy castle enhancing the family friendly experience.

Interestingly among the wide and varied range of products on offer were many produced by women. And it was a not totally profit-based. At a colourful stall with her ‘LittleMeNot’ books, Peummi Premathirathne (a legal professional) looked to nurture the joys of reading from an early age and her lovely stories based on her own life experiences growing up in Sri Lanka had many stopping by.

Also for the tiny tots, there were Pebbles Toys Montessori inspired sensory play kits for 0-18 months while Tinker Tale Toys showcased handcrafted locally made toys to foster imagination and creativity.

All animal lovers, especially dog and cat people, made a beeline to the Happy Tails stall where the endearing animal inspired stationery, mugs and coasters brought smiles and chuckles.

For the foodie shoppers there was among many, Kala Products offering a natural food range of jams and spreads, wild bees’ honey and dehydrated products; for the nut-crazy, Nuts on Top artisanal chocolates which showcased Sri Lankan flavours; and Bottles by Charmalene where Charmalene smilingly explained how many of her product range of tangy sauces and dips were her grandmother’s signature recipes.

Home décor enthusiasts headed for Magic Fingers- to marvel at the handcrafted resin decorated trays and inhale Ariyaa Fragrances – hand poured scented candles range and, pure essential oils. The Skinelect offered a skincare and personal care range specifically made for Sri Lankan skin. For the fashionistas, there was Aize and Bhoomi offering ethnic wear with a contemporary style.

At a corner table, a group of smiling ladies from the Serendip- Be the Change Foundation Jaffna proudly displayed their beaded chains. Their work supports war affected communities in the North and East.

There was more, from bamboo linen to leather – all products creative and attractive.

With over 300 visitors popping in throughout the day, the team is currently planning their next market looking to present more creative entrepreneurs with greater exposure.
