Saudi fund wants investment proposals from SEC/CSE
Saudi Arabia’s main sovereign wealth fund, Public Investment Fund (PIF), has requested the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) and the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) to send proposals on potential investments in Sri Lanka, top officials said.
“This is one of the largest sovereign funds in the world. The PFI had wanted us to send in proposals for potential investments in certain sectors,” Tushara Jayaratne, Deputy Director General of the SEC, told the Sunday Times Business.
Chathuranga Abeysinghe, Deputy Minister, Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, noted that the PFI wants partnership and collaboration on businesses along with government-to-government partnership proposals. “We aim to discuss proposals with relevant industry officials and the private sector in order to prepare these proposals,” he told the Sunday Times Business.
These discussions were held alongside the successful investor forum that the SEC and CSE held, in association with the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Saudi Arabia late last month at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Riyadh Convention and Exhibition Centre. The forum was organised to engage directly with the vibrant Sri Lankan expatriate community in the country and international investors, highlighting compelling opportunities within Sri Lanka’s capital market following the country’s successful exit from sovereign default and restoration of macroeconomic stability.
The Sri Lanka Ambassador Ameer Ajwad invited participants to make full use of the presence of high-level authorities from Sri Lanka’s key financial institutions, such as the Central Bank, the SEC and the CSE, and to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s capital market, not only as a pathway to financial growth but also as a meaningful contribution to Sri Lanka’s resilience and long-term prosperity.
Mr. Abeysinghe highlighted comprehensive legal and technology-driven reforms to improve ease of doing business, alongside Sri Lanka’s strategic positioning as a regional economic hub anchored by Port City Colombo.
This forum is part of a series of strategic engagements aimed at expanding dialogue with international and diaspora investors. Following a recent forum in Dubai, the Riyadh event reflects the growing confidence in Sri Lanka’s economic revival and capital market prospects, while providing direct access to information on long-term investment avenues through the CSE.
