Cambridge University Press & Assessment has marked a significant milestone for English assessment in Sri Lanka with the official launch of Cambridge Linguaskill at an event “Linguaskill Unlocked: Unlocking World-Class English with Cambridge”, held on January 27 in Colombo.

The launch brought together senior leaders from Sri Lanka’s corporate sector, higher education institutions, professional bodies, and authorised exam centres to examine the evolving role of English in enabling global standards, employability, and workforce readiness. Linguaskill, Cambridge’s online, certificated English proficiency exam, is trusted by leading organisations worldwide, including international corporates such as Air France and higher education institutions such as RMIT University, the company said in a media release.

Arun Rajamani, Managing Director (South Asia), Cambridge University Press and Assessment, spoke on the increasing demand for accurate, flexible, and internationally benchmarked English assessments in an interconnected global economy. He highlighted the importance of assessment systems that go beyond traditional testing models to measure real-world communication skills, while offering institutions and employers speed, reliability, and confidence in decision-making.

Ramesh Schaffter, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Janashakthi Group, delivered an address titled “English: Enabling Global Standards, From Sri Lanka”. Drawing from his leadership experience, he emphasised how English proficiency plays a critical role in building globally competitive organisations, supporting talent mobility, and positioning Sri Lanka more strongly in international business and professional ecosystems.

A panel discussion on “Unlocking World-Class English” featured Sandra De Zoysa, CX Strategist and Transformation Leader; Jehan Perinpanayagam, CEO of Infomate; Ken Vijayakumar, DGM – HR, Administration, Purchasing & Sustainability at A. Baur & Co.; Dayan Fernando, CEO of ANC Education and Coordinating Principal of the Wycherley Group of Schools; and Achini Fernando, Head of the Professional Development Unit at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT). The discussion explored how globally aligned English standards can strengthen education pathways, support fairer recruitment practices, and enhance workforce development and progression.

A key highlight of the evening was the recognition of Cambridge-authorised Linguaskill exam centres in Sri Lanka, acknowledging their role in delivering secure, high-quality, and internationally benchmarked English assessments. In addition, several leading corporates were recognised for endorsing Linguaskill as a trusted assessment tool for recruitment and staff training and development, reinforcing its relevance across both education and workplace contexts.
