Of AI hallucinations and AI bias
View(s):Salesforce, touted as the world’s no. 1 AI CRM company, on Wednesday announced the upcoming launch of the Salesforce Start-up Programme in Sri Lanka to foster growth and innovation for the country’s vibrant start-up ecosystem.
While two reputed speakers from the company extolled the virtues of this product and others at a media briefing, listing conglomerates John Keells Holdings among its many customers, some general questions on AI from the media evoked interesting responses.

Senior officials from Salesforce.
To the question whether people need to be wary of AI (Artificial Intelligence) apart from its advantages and plus points, Sridhar Hariharasubramanian, Senior Director, Technology Advisory at Salesforce, said to address some of these challenges, the company grounds the data. According to experts, this method helps reduce the chances of generating incorrect or invented content by integrating specific, use-case relevant information that is not part of the (AI) model’s trained knowledge.
He also referred to AI hallucinations and AI biases which are also addressed by grounding the data. AI hallucination refers to a situation where an AI model generates outputs that are nonsensical, factually incorrect, or entirely fabricated while AI bias refers to the tendency of AI systems to produce outputs that unfairly favour or disadvantage certain groups, according to published and accepted Internet sources.
Giving an example of AI bias, he said if nine out of 10 applicants are males applying for a particular job, AI will select the male applicant even though the sole female applicant has better credentials. “We also use proper language and ensure there is no profanity in our platforms,” he added.
He said Salesforce wants to be the catalyst that helps the next generation of Sri Lankan businesses, adding that the new product will go live by the end of January 2026 and provide Sri Lankan start-ups access to the vast Salesforce ecosystem.
A company media release said that this includes AI-powered products, mentorship programmes, joint go-to-market opportunities, and a community designed to help them build, grow, and scale.
It said Sri Lanka has emerged as the second-strongest start-up ecosystem in South Asia after India, witnessing steady momentum in founder-led innovation, driven largely by software and data start-ups that now account for nearly 60 per cent of the country’s start-up base.
Since its launch in India in December 2021, the Salesforce Start-up Programme supports a community of over 435 start-ups across India and Singapore.
