Gemstones and tourism, a significant growth avenue

While Sri Lanka is well-known for its precious gemstones, especially sapphires, the gems have historically been part of royal collections and international trade, with origins dating back over 2,500 years. The island’s rich gemstone legacy has helped put Ceylon on the world map.

“Linking gemstones and tourism presents a significant growth avenue. A sapphire tourism trail could involve visits to mines in Ratnapura, markets in Beruwala, museums in Kandy, and jewellery boutiques in Colombo, enhancing tourism’s value,” said Akram Cassim, President of the Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Association (SLGJA), speaking at the launch of the 33rd edition of FACETS 2026 held at the Cinnamon Life, City of Dreams, Colombo last weekend.

He also mentioned that the country boasts over 50 varieties of coloured gemstones. The industry embraces sustainable artisanal mining that respects natural resources and benefits local communities. Recent government and industry efforts focus on regulatory reforms to facilitate easier business practices, import-export streamline, and increased foreign exchanges.

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, who inaugurated the FACETS 2026 exhibition highlighted: “The government emphasises sustainable foreign exchange earnings by prioritising the gem and jewellery sector along with tourism. Some of the key goals include increasing high-value exports, strengthening global branding and enhancing competitiveness. To achieve these, Sri Lanka is implementing targeted export incentives, streamlined regulatory processes and better access to finance for small and medium enterprises.”

Additionally, digital traceability and certification systems are being advanced to ensure origin credibility, compliance with international standards, and confidence among investors and buyers. The focus on sustainability and good governance, including ESG standards, ethical sourcing, and environmental responsibility, will safeguard the industry’s reputation and ensure its long-term resilience, he added.

He also mentioned that the government plans to collaborate with stakeholders like the SLGJA to modernise the sector, promote responsible investment, and expand Sri Lanka’s international presence. “An exciting development is the announcement of an international trade hub in Sri Lanka, expected within this year, along with a new tax system benefiting the industry. These initiatives aim to bolster economic recovery and sustainable growth,” noted Mr. Herath.
