View(s):Time to get together to rid the country of drug menace
The current government has embarked on a process to eliminate drugs. This is truly a praiseworthy effort.
A significant number of people in Sri Lanka today are addicted to drugs, a majority of them being young men, women and schoolchildren. If the country is not saved from this national catastrophe, it will be a terrible tragedy for the people.
The drug eradication programme desperately requires the sincere cooperation of both the police and the general public. The police must be sincere and straightforward in this effort – only then will there be positive public participation in raiding drug sellers and users.
The active participation of all is required, irrespective of party politics and ethnic differences. One must not hold the view that “I am not harmed by drug users”, but instead we should work collectively to eliminate the drug menace from the country.

Once again we are the forgotten lot
This time too, President AKD seems to have ignored the older generation — perhaps because they are seen as part of the “75-year curse,” or because they cannot be easily deceived about what truly happened in 1971 and 1989.
Or maybe it’s simply because they have grown too old to make it to the polling stations — or may not even be among the living by the time the next elections arrive.
