Celebrating the 150th birthday of Germany’s Nobel Prize Laureate Thomas Mann (1875-1955), a two-day programme ‘Thomas Mann 150: Between Empire, Revolution, Republic, and Exile’ will feature film screenings, intercultural discussions and creative design. It  will take place on November 17 and 18 at the Goethe-Institut, Goethe Hall, 39 R.G. Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 7.

On Monday, November 17, the Goethe-Institut, with the Academy of Design (AOD), presents a unique dialogue between literature, design and lifestyle through a display of posters and postcards created by current AOD students–an introduction to the life and work of Thomas Mann.

On Tuesday, November 18, there will be a screening of the film Lotte in Weimar (1975) starring Lilli Palmer. Asoka de Zoysa will introduce the film in the context of the socialist aesthetics of DEFA cinema in the German Democratic Republic, highlighting its quest for international recognition—exemplified by the casting of Lilli Palmer from the “capitalist” Federal Republic of Germany in the leading role.
