Kanchuka Dharmasiri’s latest theatre production, ‘Nuga Gahak’, will be staged on November 13, 14 and 15 at 6.45 pm. at the ‘Kamatha’ Theatre, BMICH.

Adapted and directed by Dharmasiri, ‘Nuga Gahak’ is the Sinhala translation of ‘An Oak Tree’ by British playwright Tim Crouch. The play is recognised for its unconventional theatrical form has been performed over 400 times and continues to be staged around the world.

Samadhi Laksiri

‘Nuga Gahak’ unfolds as a two-actor performance. Priyantha Sirikumara takes on the role of a stage hypnotist, while the second role is performed by a different guest actor each night. He or she steps onto the stage without prior rehearsal, without ever having seen the script or ever having read the script. For the opening three nights, the guest performers will be Ashan Dias, Shyam Fernando and Samadhi Laksiri.

Priyantha Sirikumara

The story follows a father who loses his daughter in a tragic car accident. The driver responsible is a stage hypnotist, who, after the tragedy, finds himself unable to practise hypnosis through suggestion, something that defined his prior work. When the grieving father volunteers to take part in one of the hypnotist’s stage acts, the two men confront their intertwined pasts in an encounter that is as moving as it is unpredictable.

Exploring themes of loss, suggestion, and the power of the mind and imagination, ‘Nuga Gahak’ combines a gripping narrative, rich theatricality and darkly comic undertones.

This production of ‘Nuga Gahak’ is supported by the British Council in Colombo.
