Il Poya that brings to a close Kathina Chivara month

View(s):

The Kathina Chivara (robes) month which began with Vap Poya, will end with Il Full Moon Poya  on November 5.

Many important events took place during the life of the Buddha, on an Il Poya. When Maithri Bodhisattva went before the Buddha he was ordained and the Buddha mentioned that the Bodhisattva  would be born  as Maithri Buddha during the Mahabhadra Kalpaya.

Arahant Sariputtha, the chief disciple in Dhamma who went to meet his mother Sari Bemin,  gave a sermon on the virtues of the Buddha. She converted to Buddhism when earlier she was against it. The Arahant Sariputtha’s Parinibbhana (passing) was on an Il Poya when he visited Nalaka, his birthplace.  The three Jatila brothers of Uruvela – Uruvel Kassapa, Nadi Kassapa and Gaya Kassapa  who listened  to the Buddha’s sermon,  also  embraced the Buddha Dhamma.

The Buddha sent out his first 60 Arahants, the enlightened disciples as missionaries instructing them to travel and spread the Dhamma for the welfare of the people. In order to spread the Dhamma to as many people as possible, the Buddha said that two Arahants should not travel on the same path.

There are four main festivals of great importance at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, other than the normal theva (service) and one of them is the Karthika Mangalya, an Aloka Poojawa in November.

This festival of lights is conducted by the Dalada Maligawa by providing the ceremonial oil to the devalas and temples. The Kariya Karavana Korale of the Maligawa  spoke to  Sunday Times on this year’s Karthika Poojawa which will be held on Il  Full Moon Poya. On November 3, 103 Neli (an ancient measure ) of oil will be taken to the Natha devalaya in  the afternoon at a specific time and distributed by the Kariya Karawana Korala at 3 p.m. to the  four main   devalas in Kandy -  Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini and various rural devalas  and temples in the Udarata (upcountry) according to the traditional list.  At 4.10 p.m. a perahera  will be conducted around the temple square.

The Nekath Rala of the Maligawa has been informed of the Nekatha (auspicious time) as  6.11 p.m. on the 5th to light the oil lamps at all these premises on Il Poya. There will be a hevisi pooja (drumming) at the Vishnu Devalaya until dawn the next day.

The year’s festivals of the Sri Dalada Maligawa will end with the Karthika Mangalya in November.
