Sri Lanka signs UN Convention to strengthen cybersecurity
Sri Lanka signed the Cybersecurity Convention in Hanoi recently, becoming a signatory to this United Nations Convention against Cybercrime, focused on strengthening legal frameworks and fostering partnerships among stakeholders at both local and international levels.
In three months the ministry will initiate on inter-ministerial mechanism with ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs, Public Security, Defence and related entities to start the process on ratification of this convention, Waruna Dhanapala Acting Secretary Digital Ministry said.
He said that the cabinet has approved a national cybersecurity policy, marking a significant step towards establishing a comprehensive approach to cybersecurity in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has made notable progress in combating cybercrime by ratifying the Council of Europe’s Convention on Cybercrime in May 2015, becoming the first South Asian country to do so. The recent ratification of the Cybersecurity Convention demonstrates the commitment to enhancing the cybersecurity framework and aligning with international standards, the official added further.
As part of its cybersecurity strategy, Sri Lanka plans to implement a national-level Malware and Threat Hunting Lab this year. Investments aimed at improving security for state institutions are also part of the National Cybersecurity Strategy, with numerous state institutions already informed and security assessments conducted.
Additionally, the country’s Cybersecurity Law is under review by a panel and is expected to be presented to parliament this year. This legislation will empower the Central Security Agency to manage the national cybersecurity strategy and protect critical information infrastructure, particularly in light of the digital economy. The Act will also enhance the capabilities of SLCERT, enabling it to better respond to and manage cybersecurity incidents.
