NLAC discusses estate labour wages
View(s):Proposals to increase the daily wage of plantations workers to Rs. 1,750 were among issues discussed at the National Labour Advisory Council (NLAC) meeting on Thursday.
During the meeting, union representatives on the council raised this proposed wage increase and requested the government and the private sector for clarification or confirmation of this move.
While the private sector representations on the council didn’t respond, Labour Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha reportedly said that the matter was under discussion as there were many elements to the proposal.
Last week, the Sunday Times Business reported that Regional Plantation Companies (RPCs) have agreed to go ahead with the wage increase for estate workers as proposed by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake subject to certain considerations
In return for the increased wages, which is going to cost the industry an additional Rs.7.1 billion to the annual wage bill; RPCs intend adding productivity increases and minimum attendance as a requirement.
