Senior pensioners honoured at event, “A strong, healthy, and inspired life”
View(s):The annual National Pensioners’ Day was marked on October 8, with a felicitation ceremony honouring the country’s senior retirees under the theme, “A strong, healthy, and inspired life”, at a retired holiday resort in Wedamulla, Kelaniya.
The event was held under the patronage of the Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. A.H.M.H. Abayarathna, with the participation of Deputy Minister Ruwan Senarath, Ministry Secretary Aloka Bandara, Director General of Pensions Chaminda Hettitiarachchi, Additional Director General Sujani Peththawadu, and Chief Financial Officer A.D.T.N. Abeysinghe.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Abayarathna assured that pension benefits introduced in the previous budget would continue with further plans to increase pensions each year. “Our government bows its head in respect to the right of every senior citizen to lead a dignified and prosperous retirement life,” the Minister said.
Pensions Director General Mr. Hettitiarachchi, speaking at the event, noted that all remaining pension arrears would be settled as soon as possible. He also announced that under the government’s digitisation initiative, pension-related services would soon be accessible on phones.
A highlight of the event was the unveiling of the Retired Tribute Song, composed by Mr. Hettitiarachchi, with music by Master of Arts Lal Ananda Abeydeera and vocals by Visharada Edward Jayakody.
