The Expert Committee on the Green Hydrogen Policy is currently looking at the submissions made by industry officials on the hydrogen policy at the Hydrogen Policy stakeholder meeting held last month, organised by the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA), top officials said.

“Many who participated are interested in implementing the green hydrogen technology. Upon the recommendation of the expert committee, we intend to incorporate some of the submissions made by the stakeholders present, that they come out,” Prof. Jayalath Bandara, Chairman SEA, told The Sunday Times Business. Green hydrogen is a clean energy carrier produced via electrolysis of water using renewable electricity. It serves as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuel-derived hydrogen, supporting global decarbonisation efforts and playing a vital role in the transition to low-carbon energy systems, particularly for applications that are challenging to electrify.

Sri Lanka’s Green Hydrogen Road Map has identified road transportation, bunkering, ceramics, and glass manufacturing etc, to be introduced as pilot projects. It includes phased approaches for feasibility studies, pilot projects, large-scale deployment, and export market development to achieve long-term sustainable and low-carbon energy goals. For green hydrogen consumption, a Power Ministry official said that the ministry aims to develop a local manufacturing ecosystem to produce components such as electrolysis and support green hydrogen ambitions. Sri Lanka has also set an ambitious target of establishing 30 GB of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen production in the next 25 years.

Hydrogen has the potential to serve as a clean cooking fuel, especially in communities that rely on biomass and fossil fuels, reducing indoor pollution and associated health effects.

The SEA meeting saw about 200 participants, including those from state agencies such as the Board of Investment, the Ministry of Environment etc. with participants discussing various aspects of the policy.
