350 MW Sobadanavi LNG Power Plant inaugurated
View(s):The Sobadanavi LNG Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya, with a total capacity of 350 MW and integrated into the national grid, inaugurated recently, is designed to meet 12 per cent of Sri Lanka’s current electricity demand, playing a crucial role in the country’s goal of generating 70 per cent of its energy from renewable sources by 2030.
The project, which showcases Sri Lankan engineering expertise, is a significant step towards ensuring energy independence and economic growth, officials said.
The plant was developed in two phases: the first phase involved open-cycle operations with the gas turbine for a capacity of 220 MW, while the second phase added a 130 MW capacity with the addition of the steam turbine, completed in June 2025. Utilising liquefied natural gas (LNG) as its primary fuel, it is expected that the LNG availability will be within three years of full commercial operations.
Implemented by Sobadanavi (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Lakdhanavi Ltd, the project was financed through a consortium of local banks. It not only boosts Sri Lanka’s energy infrastructure but also creates thousands of jobs and supports industrial growth, contributing to overall economic stability, CEO of LTL Holdings, Nuhuman Marikkar, said.
The construction phase particularly involved a significant number of female engineers, reflecting a commitment to women’s empowerment in the workforce.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, addressing the gathering, emphasised the importance of energy independence for national development and the need to reduce electricity costs, which are among the highest in the region.
