The Judicial Application of Human Rights Law translated into Mandarin
View(s):Dr Nihal Jayawickrama’s pioneering book entitled “The Judicial Application of Human Rights Law” was published by Cambridge University Press in 2002 and reprinted in 2006. A revised and updated second edition was published in 2017. That 1285-page second edition has now been translated into Mandarin and published in China jointly by Cambridge University Press and the Beijing-based Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The translation is by a professor of international human rights law at the Institute of International Law in Beijing.
Dr Nihal Jayawickrama
Dr Jayawickrama’s book, which draws on the case law of the superior courts of over 100 countries on all the continents, as well as the jurisprudence of the regional and international human rights monitoring bodies, was described as the first ever attempt to encapsulate the judicial interpretation of human rights law in one comprehensive volume. It is now believed to be the first-ever Chinese-language publication in China on international human rights jurisprudence.
Dr Jayawickrama was the Ariel F. Sallows Professor of Human Rights at the University of Saskatchewan and an associate professor at the University of Hong Kong, where he taught Comparative Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. He was Executive Director of Transparency International in Berlin, Chair of the Trustees of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative in London, and a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague.
A member of the Sri Lanka Bar, he held the offices of Attorney-General and Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Justice. He is
the Rapporteur of the UN-sponsored Judicial Integrity Group, which produced the Bangalore Principles of Judicial Conduct.
