Run for HER attracts overwhelming number of participants
View(s):A fortnight ago, communities across Sri Lanka gathered at Independence Square to take part in the highly anticipated ‘Run for HER’ event, organised by YoungShip Sri Lanka. Despite heavy rain, the event saw an overwhelming number of participants and supporters come together to celebrate women’s empowerment and economic advancement in rural areas of the country.
YoungShip Sri Lanka, the local chapter of YoungShip International, dedicated this initiative to raising awareness and supporting emerging female entrepreneurs. The event also aimed to challenge social stigmas and inequalities that hinder women’s progress. All proceeds from the event will go towards boosting women’s economic growth, particularly in underserved rural communities.
The event was not just about running—it was about making a statement. ‘Run for HER’ was created to uplift women and showcase their strength in breaking barriers. It also coincided with the International Day for Women in Maritime, observed on May 18, with this year’s theme ‘Oceans of Opportunity’. The event celebrated the role of women in the maritime sector, from captains and engineers to port operators and policymakers.
Despite the downpour, the spirit of the event remained high. It kicked off with a Duathlon (solo and teams of three), followed by a 5km Run/Walk/Stroll, and ended with a lively 1km Kids’ Race. The weather did little to dampen the excitement. In fact, it only added to the event’s unforgettable atmosphere, highlighting how communities can unite for a greater cause.
“Hats off to everyone who showed up despite the rain. It was a true testament to the power of sport in uniting communities and driving social change,” said Nirmal Dissanayake, Chairman of YoungShip Sri Lanka.
“We are proud to stand with women, to champion their success, and to inspire a new generation to break barriers”.
YoungShip Sri Lanka’s efforts to engage youth in the maritime and logistics industries emphasise sustainability and community outreach. The success of this event proved that when communities come together, not even the weather can stop them from achieving a common goal.
YoungShip Sri Lanka is a non-profit organisation, part of a global network with over 5,000 members in 40 countries. Based in Colombo, the association focuses on empowering youth in the maritime and logistics industries through knowledge-sharing, operational excellence, and sustainability initiatives.
