Jaffna Uni Sports Science students visit Olympic House
View(s):The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) and the Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGASL) hosted a successful study tour on July 24 for undergraduates from the Sports Science Unit of the University of Jaffna. A total of 35 students, including 19 female students, took part in the visit to the Olympic House in Colombo.
The study tour offered students a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand exposure to the operations of NOCSL and CGASL. The visit formed part of the institutions’ ongoing commitment to empowering future professionals in the field of sports science, education, and management.
The students were taken on a guided facility tour by Group Captain Nalin de Silva, National Course Director of NOC Sri Lanka. The tour included the Administrative Office, the Sri Lanka Olympic House Museum, and the Racecourse grounds. His interactive approach provided students with an in-depth understanding of the day-to-day functioning and historical significance of the institution.
A presentation on the sociological perspectives of the Olympic Movement in Sri Lanka was delivered by Professor Samantha Nanayakkara, Co-Chair of the Education Committee of NOCSL. Additionally, a session was conducted by members of the NOCSL staff, offering an overview of the roles of NOCSL and CGASL in national and international sports development.
The students were also given the opportunity to meet and interact with key NOCSL leadership. President Suresh Subramaniam, Vice President Niloo Jayatilake, and General Manager Lal Wickrematunge attended the event and engaged in discussions with the students.
A special highlight of the visit was a donation of books and magazines from the Sri Lanka Olympic House archives to the University of Jaffna library, promoting continued learning and access to Olympic literature.
The students described the experience as both informative and inspiring. Abivarna, one of the participants, shared, “The session was truly impressive. Despite their packed schedules, they took the time to share valuable insights, some of which were completely new to us. The facilitators were knowledgeable and engaging throughout.”
P. Jaanuja added, “The session was highly informative and well-structured. It provided valuable insights into athlete development, sports science applications, and Olympic values.”
K. Thamilarasi reflected, “The presentations were excellent and shared valuable guidance on work opportunities, higher studies, and career prospects. The visit to the modern facilities was very inspiring and motivating for our future goals.”
Another student, R. Rakavi, commented, “It was a wonderful day. I was especially impressed by the way Group Captain motivated us and gave priority to the female students. His approach was very admirable.”
M. Thisan also noted, “Everything was organised well. The information shared was new and useful to us, and we were glad to be part of such a meaningful visit.”
