‘Why We Sing’: Seniors find their voice with Soul Sounds

It’s never too late to chase a dream. And for the members of the Soul Sounds Senior Community Choir, that dream is about to take centre stage.

‘Why We Sing’, the maiden concert of the Senior Community Choir of the Soul Sounds Academy will come alive on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 7.00 pm. at The Clubhouse, Havelock City, Colombo. ‘Why We Sing’ is the brainchild of Soundarie David Rodrigo, an internationally acclaimed pianist and choral director of the Soul Sounds Academy, together with assistant directors Shenuk Wijesinghe and Uvini Sirisena.

During her many overseas trips, Soundarie noticed that international choir festivals often feature vibrant senior choirs. The idea resonated deeply with her, proving that music knows no age limits. Recognising that many seniors in Sri Lanka have both the time and passion for singing, she created a platform for them to follow their musical dreams.

‘I knew we could create something just as special here’ she said.

Formed in March this year, the Soul Sounds Senior Community Choir comprises about 45 enthusiastic amateur singers, a mix of ladies and gentlemen united by their love for music. For their first performance, ‘Why We Sing’, the choir will bring the audience a rich mix of songs evergreen. The repertoire for the evening will include evergreen English favourites from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, alongside beloved Sinhala and Tamil hits.

Adding to the evening’s charm, the Soul Sounds Academy Parents Choir will make a special guest appearance, while a mystery entertainer (whose name will only be revealed on stage) promises to keep the audience guessing until the last moment.
For many of the choir members, singing is more than a hobby, its therapy. ‘Music lifts your spirit. It’s about connection, joy, and the sheer thrill of harmonising with others’ said Soundarie.

Tickets are available now at Soul Sounds Academy, 57/2, Kassapa Road, Off Jawatte Road, Colombo 5. For more details call Amenda on 0779 271 644.
