The long awaited August holidays are fast approaching and if you are looking for some fun activities you can do while you take a break from the books, check out our list:
If arts and crafts is your thing, then head to the Sapumal Foundation as they are holding a workshop titled ‘Wheel throwing pottery’ where you get to work with clay, on August 8 with sessions from 9.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. and in the afternoon from 11.45 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. and 2.30 to 4.30 p.m.

Enjoy suspense? Escape the Room has ‘interactive adventure games,’ where you can solve clues and puzzles all in the course of 60 minutes. A team of two or a team of three to six people can play. They’ve got the Detectives Room, (medium level), which is where you’ll be accused of killing the detective and have to find out who did it, and Sabotage (hardest level), which is a military base where you will ‘perform a mission,’ but have to make it out before it is too late.

If you’re interested in space, the solar system, or curious about what you can find in our night skies, then the Planetarium in Colombo is a place to visit with family and friends. The shows are at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., each an hour and a half long. The shows feature a 4D film that provides information on our solar system, showcases our night sky, and offers insights into the stars.

Enthusiastic about learning a new sport? The Ceylon Motor Yacht Club is having a ‘Summer Sailing Programme, Stage 1 and 2’.They will be using Optimists and GP-14s (boats), with trainers who are internationally qualified coaches, and offering club facilities, safety equipment, training boats and course materials as well as an introduction to personal equipment, wind direction guidance, sailing manoeuvres, boat landing and recovery and capsize and recovery.
Two sessions are available from August 14 to 18, and August 18-22. Ten hours of use of a club boat (in addition to the training time), is included in the fee as well as two STEM sessions: Module One, Measuring Wind and Module Two, Buoyancy. Contact Rajeev on 071 481 8098 for more details.
Looking to improve your general knowledge? Then head to Barefoot in Colombo 3 for their Quiz Night, happening every two weeks, with quiz masters, Lihan Mendis or Sakina Ali Akbar. Featuring topics from music to movies or even trivia and ‘theme rounds, etc.’, Quiz Nights take place on Wednesdays from 6.45 p.m.
