Kollupitiye Malca’s latest musical release is striking a powerful chord in the local wedding scene and for good reason. ‘Mage Duwe’ (My Daughter), the heartfelt new single by veteran artiste Malcolm Perera, fondly known as ‘Dream Team Malca’, is quickly becoming the most requested ‘going away’ anthem at weddings across Sri Lanka.
‘Mage Duwe’ fills a long-felt void in Sri Lankan wedding music. For years, the industry has lacked a truly soulful ballad that captures the emotional weight of a father bidding farewell to his daughter. Malcolm’s latest offering steps in gracefully, reminiscent of the nostalgic sentiment once stirred by ‘Kadalle athiwu kirilli wage’, the iconic farewell song by Mignonne Fernando of The Jetliners.
‘Mage Duwe’ was penned by Samantha Geekiyanage of the band ‘Xotic’, brought to life through his emotive musical direction and beautifully rendered by the heartfelt vocals of Malcolm Perera.
‘Mage Duwe’ (My Daughter) is the very first original single by Malcolm, released after nearly four decades in the music industry. Malcolm Perera is a veteran figure in Sri Lanka’s Western music scene, known for his remarkable contributions as a band leader/manager and showbiz personality.
A proud alumnus of St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, Malcolm stepped into the music world in the early 1980s and quickly made a name for himself. He is best known as the founder and driving force behind the popular show band ‘Dream Team with Ayesha’, which became a household name during the late 1980s and 1990s. Under Malcolm’s leadership, ‘Dream Team’ powered by the vocal prowess of Ayesh Gunasekera, earned a reputation for high-energy performances, sophisticated musical arrangements and vibrant stage presence. The band became a staple at weddings, dances, nightclubs and hotel circuits across the country.
With nearly four decades in the industry, Malcolm has earned recognition not only as a singer and band manager but also as a mentor to many young musicians. His latest release, ‘Mage Duwe’, marks a new chapter in his musical journey, showcasing his emotional depth as a solo artiste.
‘The lyrics are tender and evocative, they weave a tapestry of sorrow and pride, emotions every parent understands but rarely expresses aloud’ said Malcolm Perera, reflecting on ‘Mage Duwe’.
With its hauntingly beautiful melody and touching narrative, ‘Mage Duwe’ is more than just a song, it’s an emotional experience. It stands as a tribute to family, transition and the unspoken strength behind every parental goodbye.
In an era where trends often overshadow tradition, Malcolm Perera gently reminds us of the timeless stories woven into ceremonies, especially that quiet, powerful moment when a daughter steps into her new life.
‘The song is told mostly from the father’s point of view, exploring the inner conflict of letting go of his daughter’s hand while holding onto a lifetime of memories. We also brought in the mother’s voice in the second verse to add emotional depth and show that this moment touches both parents in different way’ he explained.
