A travelling exhibition on ‘Empowerment: Art and Feminisms’
View(s):How do artists act in the postcolonial, digital present, based on their respective situations? What emancipatory understanding underlies their art? How do they broaden the perspective on a feminist-oriented future?
31 feminist artist positions will be on view at the JDA Perera Gallery (University of Visual and Performing Arts) from August 4-11. This travelling exhibition which has recently been in New Delhi and Pune, India, looks at inclusion at all levels and showcases the voices and rights of various gender and social minorities, especially in the context of South Asia.
‘Empowerment: Art and Feminisms’ is curated by Andreas Beitin, Katharina Koch und Uta Ruhkamp of Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg with Amruta Nemivant of Goethe-Institut Mumbai. The exhibition is accompanied by a diverse programme of events conceptualized by the Bangalore-based Arts Collective Sandbox.
Feminism has long been part of popular culture in Europe and the USA. Despite worldwide movements, demonstrations, and petitions to achieve equal rights, even in the 21st century, comprehensive gender equality cannot be spoken of with regard to women and the LGBTQIA+ communities – neither here in Colombo nor elsewhere.
Against the backdrop of ecological disasters, war, pandemics and growing social inequality, the artists also address the intersections of various global conflict areas and offer approaches that are inclusive and forward-looking incorporating nature and its non-human living beings. Provocative and direct, also poetic, humorous and subtle, the works invite reflection and rethinking.
