While this applies to any language, English holds special importance in Sri Lanka’s international dealings, given its prevalence in global diplomacy, education, and commerce.
Unfortunately, many brilliant Sri Lankan students face inequality due to the lack of accessible facilities to learn English. As a result, they are unjustly placed second in competitive professions despite their intellectual potential. It is vital to recognize that brilliance stems from cognitive ability – not language proficiency. Yet, to share one’s thoughts meaningfully with a wider audience, fluency in at least one language is necessary.
In Sri Lanka, Sinhala and Tamil are the primary languages spoken. Many of our current politicians are highly proficient in Sinhala and demonstrate critical thinking skills, as they are well-educated and grounded in the lived realities of their communities. Their ability to “feel the pulse of the people” comes from having grown up within those very societies.
However, in international contexts, conveying messages in English is essential to reach a broader population. Politicians who lack fluency in English should not shy away from seeking the support of interpreters – that profession exists precisely to bridge linguistic gaps. There is no shame in using interpretation services, especially when politicians can express ideas clearly in their native languages. This allows messages to be beautifully and effectively conveyed to audiences.
Given that the intellectual capacity of many present-day leaders exceeds that of those in earlier generations, their ideas deserve to be communicated thoughtfully and inclusively. It’s high time the Sri Lankan government makes systematic use of interpreters when necessary.
Furthermore, during presidential meetings, a Tamil translator should be present to ensure all linguistic communities are respected and included. Since the President often speaks sensibly and insightfully, it’s crucial his words reach every citizen. The appointment of Presidential spokespersons proficient in all three languages – Sinhala, Tamil, and English – is a timely and necessary step. This will reduce unwarranted criticism from individuals who possess fluent English from privileged backgrounds yet lack depth in thought.
