The multi-sectoral task force to prevent ragging, harassment and violence in state universities has been formed, and will begin work immediately, Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said.

At its meeting, the Attorney General’s Department was represented by a Solicitor General while academic staff, members of the University Grants Commission, marshals and students were also present.

Ragging and all forms of harassment and violence will be covered in the programme, to weed out these issues from the universities, the deputy minister said, and it will not only apply to students but also to staff members.

Relevant laws will be amended so that there will be recourse to those who face harassment or bullying via telephones message or calls or social media. “The laws at present don’t cover areas such as cyber bullying/harassment and enact some of the laws will be added,” he said.

The task force will look into areas such as how the privacy of victims can be protected, as well as how they can continue to attend classes without fear of reprisals.

He added that responsibility should be borne at all levels of administration and there should be no room for anyone within the system to bypass their responsibility.

“There should be strict implementation at all levels and there should also be punitive actions as well,” he said. (DW)
