The Post Graduate Institute of Science (PGIS) of the University of Peradeniya held a mathematics conference this week entitled the Fourth International Conference on Mathematics and Mathematics Education (ICMME 2025).

“The conference was to host to knowledge that can be defined as being at the edge of human knowledge and can be defined as being even beyond the PHD level,” Senior Lecturer of Peradeniya University Dr Ashwini Amarasinghe said.

The conference has high end math and goes beyond the university level, she said.

The chief guest at the event was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya Prof W M T Madhujith. Prof Suzanne Lenhart, a distinguished mathematician from the US, was the keynote speaker for the event, and spoke on Mathematical Biology.

Dr Amarasinghe explained that the subject of Mathematical Biology covered how diseases spread through the use of math and mathematical models.

Several policy makers from Sri Lanka attended the conference, she said, and they would use the information provided at the conference to enhance math learning in
Sri Lanka.

The conference would be divided into both pure math and applied math, as well educational math.

The conference is targeted at both undergraduate students and lecturers as well educators and teachers.

By attending the conference teachers and educators can grasp how teaching can be done better, and whether to use the traditional chalk and board method or to use activity-based learning.

The new teaching method would involve context learning or activities-based learning, where real life problems can be generated to teach math.

Dr Amarasinghe added there were 20 publications on mathematical education and another 40 publications on math in general.

These would published as conference proceedings, which is a short version of a journal or a standard version of a shortened formal publication.

People can send in their work and this would be sent to experts and senior lecturers would provide further comment on
the publications.
