School cleaning programme on July 9 to target mosquito breeding sites
View(s):‘Clean Steps, Safe Places’ a cleanup programme of all schools, pirivena schools and National Colleges of Education will be held on July 9.
This day long programme is part of a wider programme that will be conducted to ensure that places of education are kept free from mosquitoes and other diseases causing environments.
Deputy Minister of Education Madura Seneviratne said the programme will include school grounds, classrooms, sanitary facilities, teacher quarters and rooms as well as canteen and other such places within school premises.
The programme will include discussions on how keeping school premises clean can be maintained on a regular basis.
It has been found that 25 percent of the cases where children have got dengue fever or Chikungunya have been contracted while at schools. In about 50 percent of the schools there were mosquito breeding sites within their premises thus exposing students to these illnesses.
The preventive programmes will be carried out along with health authorities including Public Health Inspectors. The programme will cover around 11,000 government schools across the country.
Provincial Councils too have been informed to join in the programmes. (DW)
