A Chokolaate platform for young designers

The 15th anniversary edition of the Chokolaate Mother-Daughter Fashion Designer competition hit the runway under the Grand Marquee at Taj Samudra on May 31 with Samali Senevirathne emerging the winner and Ashen Gunasinghe adjudged the first runner-up. The second runner-up was Hasna Enaya.

Said Michelle Gunesekara, founder of Chokolaate magazine, “Tonight I feel we celebrate not just fashion but an incredible journey of young designers,” adding, “we strive to create a space where designers can take the first step into the industry.”

The competition showcased collections from ten finalists: Sneha Murlidhar, Gayandi De Silva, Hasna Enaya, Ashen Gunasinghe, Dumasha Sadhvi, Zipporah Britto, Sanjalee Abeysinghe, Kavindya Nethmini, Paramie Fernando and Samali Senevirathne. With the assistance of mentors and industry professionals, they crafted outfits for three categories: casual wear, sportswear and evening wear.

The winner of the casual wear segment was Kavindya Nethmini, while the sports segment was won by Ashen Gunasinghe and Hasna Enaya was the winner of the Evening Wear segment.

Curated for the show’s fragrance partner, Secrets by ICL Brands Pvt Ltd., the ‘Secret runway’ segment presented a challenge for the designers to create ‘modern design based on their exciting new range of body mists’. Winning here were Samali Senevirathne, with Sneha Murlidhar as the first runner-up and Kavindya Nethmini as the second runner-up.

On the panel of judges were Ramani Fernando (Ramani Fernando Salons), Rajitha Jayasuriya (Director of Corporate Affairs at MAS Holdings),  Danu Innasithamby (media personality ), and Solinica Perumal (advertising and marketing specialist).

The most popular model (duo) competition  set up for Instagram saw Samali Senevirathne’s Mother Daughter duo, Thakshila Godapitiya and Medini Wijerathne taking home the prize.
