The handing over ceremony was graced by Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Miyon Lee, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Urban Development Minister Anura Karunathilaka, Environment Minister Dammika Patabandige, Country Director of EDCF Colombo Ha Won Suk and Head of Overseas Business, Kolon Global Corporation Yoon Kichul.
Ambassador Miyon Lee explained the broader impact of the project: “The newly completed water supply system in Ruwanwella goes far beyond simply delivering water, it ensures a stable supply of clean, treated drinking water, directly improving public health and the quality of life for the local community.”
The initiative would support public health, rural development, and environmental sustainability.
The Korean government believes this project, with EDCF and Kolon Global Corporation as key partners, will stand as a landmark achievement in the Sri Lanka–Korea development partnership, one that contributes to long-term, inclusive, and sustainable growth.
The Korea Exim Bank’s EDCF office has played a pivotal role in providing concessional financing for key development sectors in Sri Lanka, including water infrastructure, transportation, and vocational training. Among its notable contributions are the 2008 Greater Galle Water Supply Project, the 2015 Ruhunupura Water Supply Project, and the 2021 Deduru Oya Water Supply Project. These projects, also implemented in collaboration with Kolon Global Corporation, a global leader in construction engineering and the principal contractor for the Ruwanwella initiative, underscore Korea’s continued commitment to sustainable development in Sri Lanka.
