I often buy books for leisure; to me, they are captivating treats, much like great conversations between two souls. Living away from my home country, I especially enjoy finding books written in Sinhala. I frequently pick up titles on unusual subjects or unique genres. One such book that caught my attention was ‘Dinu minisekuta sevanællakva’ (Untold Voices of Success), a fresh and unique work by Hasitha Kuruppu. In fact, ‘Dinu minisekuta sevanællakva’ kept me thoroughly engaged all evening, leaving me breathless until the early hours of the next day.

It is significant that author has not included any prominent figures from the sports field in Sri Lanka to the book. I appreciate the writer’s efforts to bring these untold stories, controversies, and hidden details to light. The book’s thoughtful pacing effectively covers nearly a lifetime of experiences without falling into mundane or boring details. ‘Dinu minisekuta sevanællakva’ represents a fresh attempt to offer something provocative and unique to readers in Sri Lanka. This distinctive approach adds an interesting and diverse theme to the book, making it a noteworthy contribution to literary history.
In today’s society, divorce has become a common choice for many people, often leading individuals to opt for divorce or remain single instead of marrying. Marriage is a beautiful institution that requires two key ingredients to succeed: understanding and empathy. The author, Kuruppu, has carefully selected individuals with demanding careers, such as those in the armed forces, police, politics, business or the entertainment industry. These individuals manage their busy professional lives alongside their marriages, emphasising the importance of mutual support between spouses. Notably, the book presents all the perspectives from the point of view of the wives. Kuruppu conducted thorough research and prepared diligently before interviewing these women. He establishes a profound bond with each subject through extensive background research, which covers each individual’s childhood and their journey to marriage and success, including discussions about children and family. The author demonstrates an open and candid approach in his conversations with these women, allowing them to share strong and bold statements about their marital experiences, even though they come from traditional Asian backgrounds.
