Guidance International School crowned All-Island U-13 cager champions
View(s):Guidance International School (GIS), marked a momentous day on April 5, for not only launching of its state-of-the-art multi-sport complex, but also with a triumphant victory that will be etched in the school’s history. The Under-13 basketball team of GIS emerged as the All-Island ‘C’ Division champions at the 2025 Basketball Tournament, bringing immense pride and glory to the institution.
Displaying remarkable talent, teamwork, and unwavering sportsmanship, the young champions secured dominant victories over several renowned schools across the country. Their road to the title was a testament to their hard work and determination as GIS defeated President’s College, Kotte (38-6), Karandeniya Central College (39-17), Gankanda Central College (51-13) and Mahamewna Buddhist School (35-26) in the preliminary round games.
They took on the much fancied Maris Stella College, Negombo team only to record an inspiring 54-30 win in the semi-final and book their berth in the final, creating history for GIS. The final against Kalutara Vidyalaya, however, turned out to be an unexpected thriller as both teams vying for supremacy intensely. Eventually GIS sneaked through to defeat Kalutara Vidyalaya by a whisker, by 35-34, to emerge champions. The championship run was led by the exceptional leadership of skipper Thenuka Wijesekara and his deputy Vinuda Thisum Wahalatantri, whose guidance and determination inspired the team throughout the tournament. Nejana Methdinu Senavirathna was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament, while skipper Thenuka was honoured as the Best Defensive Player.
The victorious team included Thenuka Wijesekara as captain, Vinuda Thisum Wahalatantri as deputy captain, Thenuka Chathumina, Nejana Methdinu Senavirathna, Yethum Yusara Pieris, Nethaka Dahamda Ambepitiya, Chaitan Akein Perera, Adeesha Dulnitha Gamage, Nethul Abilash Udawatta, Sahesh Nadunitha Induwararchchi, Pavithu Shenuka Sasmith, Venuka Kalhan Thilakarathna, P.A. Sasmitha S. Chandrasena, L.A. Sihela Sensith, and M.B. Okitha Sandul de Silva.
The victory was made possible following the dedication of Coach Gavi Coorey, Teacher-in-Charge Hiruni, Sports Coordinator Nihal Atthanayake and the Principal, Shiromi Chandragupta. Their commitment, guidance, and belief in the potential of the young athletes were instrumental in guiding the team to victory.
