The third and fourth days of the 21st edition of Colombo Fashion Week (CFW) took place on March 8 and 9 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo. This year, the fashion platform shifted its focus — to promote Colombo as a hub, with events taking place at hotels along the Galle Face stretch.

Day Three began with Aslam Hussein’s glamour collection of couture and ready-to-wear ensembles with dark hues complemented by embellished metallics and intricate embroidered floral detailing. Charini Suriyage’s designs highlighted timeless elegance with a contemporary edge, with floral prints on luxurious silk fabrics and modern silhouettes. Dinushi Pamunuwa’s label, La Pard, drew inspiration from a deck of cards, infusing the contemporary designs of the four suites into traditional batiks.

British designer Charlotte Allen’s label Klements ‘The Ghosts’ collection – part of a collaboration with London’s Burgh House in Hampstead – presented the label’s distinctive hand-painted prints inspired by literature, music, and the natural world. Payal Pratap’s namesake brand’s ‘Soft Parade’ collection featured silks, cotton, and linen blends merged with work inspired by the Kedia garments of Gujarat, blending rustic exuberance with sophistication.

Opening the show the next evening by embracing the new dawn of spring, Indian designer Samant Chauhan presented his collection ‘Whispers of Spring’ which played up the fresh beauty of nature with exquisite floral prints and detailed embroidery over a beaming canvas of white. LOVI Ceylon’s ‘Bloom’ collection by Asanka de Mel and Natharlea Yahampath featured embroidery, handloom, beading, and stitching on the designs.

Ayesh Wickramarathne (featured on our Magazine cover)  presented his vision of sustainable fashion with ‘Zero Hero’, a collection of contemporary eveningwear that utilised natural treatments, strategic pattern making, and draping techniques to minimise waste. Fouzul Hameed paid tribute to the origins of his brand Hameedia in anticipation of its 75th anniversary by going back to the signature hues that are its mainstays.

Bringing the fourth day along with CFW Summer 2024 to a close was the ‘In My Garden’ collection by Darshi Keerthisena for Buddhi Batiks –  a poignant expression through design of her feelings after the passing of her father, Buddhi Keerthisena, the founder of Buddhi Batiks.
