The Colombo District Court will consider tomorrow whether to extend the interim injunction issued against former Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara, preventing him from hindering Acting General Secretary Sarathi Dushmantha from performing his duties.

Mr. Jayasekara was removed as SLFP General Secretary in September last year, with the SLFP also suspending his party membership.

The complainants, former President and SLFP Chairman Maithripala Sirisena and Mr. Dushmantha, have alleged in their plaint that even after being removed from the position, Mr. Jayasekara had made various false claims to the Election Commission and others to prevent the Acting General Secretary from performing his duties.

They have noted that a charge sheet was issued against the respondent on December 2, 2023, detailing serious allegations of wrongdoing against him. The charges include that he had violated the party constitution by making deposits from funds belonging to the SLFP on behalf of other parties contesting under the Nidahas Janatha Sandhanaya at the local government election called in 2023 without obtaining party approval; that he had verbally abused and threatened party officials and activists; and that he had made public comments in the media aimed at insulting the party leadership and impeding the party’s future political activities.

The complainants have stressed that Mr. Jayasekera’s actions to impede the Acting General Secretary from performing his duties risk severely affecting the party’s organisation as well as its administrative and political functions.

The case is due to come before District Court Judge Sandun Vithana.
