Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam has stressed that investigation agencies should take action against persons engaged in spreading distorted religious teachings that harm religious sentiments without waiting for complaints to be lodged.

The AG said this to the newly-appointed Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Rohan Premaratne when the latter called on him recently.

The AG’s instructions are that rather than wait for a complaint, investigation agencies should act as soon as they get to know of such incidents. Accordingly, agencies have been instructed to locate witnesses who could testify to the incidents, notify court and obtain court orders to take quick action against those who spread distorted religious teachings.

The instructions follow representations made to the government by the Maha Nayaka Theras.

Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Dileepa Peiris, informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court this week that Mahinda Kodithuwakku, the self-proclaimed ‘Avalokitheswara Bodisattva,’ who was arrested on charges of distorting Buddhism, had spent Rs 1.5 million in the first 15 days he had spent in Sri Lanka.

Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody till January 24 and also directed authorities to refer the suspect to a psychiatrist and submit a report.
