The environment and the protection of trees seem to have been given less prominence when undertaking development activities.

In recent weeks, trees in the city have been in the news after five passengers died when a tree fell on the bus they were in, followed by several other incidents in Colombo and outstations where trees have also fallen on vehicles after prolonged rains.

However, there have been instances where some persons deliberately damage trees eventually leading to the tree collapsing. Some instances have been spotted in Colombo too.

When there are mature or significant trees in close proximity to any building construction sites, the best practice would be to seek the advice of an arborist so that it will be easier to modify the project design to keep the root of such trees intact.
