Adverse weather conditions, including flooding, continue to affect several parts of the country, causing damage and displacing more people.

Many families were displaced in areas including Malimbada, Akurassa, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda, Atthuduwa, Matara Fort, Hatton and Gal Bamma.

The Ja-Ela canal overflowed, and the emergency relief operations unit of the Navy was mobilised to provide cooked meals and other assistance to people in Bandigoda.

The Punchiduwawatta Village on the east side of Baddegama, Ganegama, experienced floods due to the Gin Ganga and Keembi Ela overflowing.

Many roads, including the Haputale-Welimada main road, the Badulla-Colombo main road, the main Colombo-Kandy road between Nelundeniya and Udukumbura, the Colombo-Badulla main road, and the Kelani Valley railway line, were obstructed due to earth slips and trees falling in some instances.

Injuries and destruction to property were reported due to trees falling.

Many waterfalls were reported to be overflowing. The Pundaluoya Dunsinane falls had overflowed in a manner never witnessed before, with mud-mixed water gushing out.

Farmers in parts of the country continued to suffer losses as their crops remained submerged in muddy water.

There were signs of water levels receding in Matara, which was severely affected by the inclement weather for the past few months. However, residents say that water levels are on the rise again.

Children mainly at risk due to bad weather

The prevailing weather condition is posing a health risk, especially to schoolchildren.

Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) Director Dr. G. Wijesuriya told the Sunday Times that with dengue fever on the rise, parents should take relevant precautionary measures to eliminate breeding grounds in and around their homes.

He further stressed that people should be cautious when using well water and water from flowing streams, as the water could be infected by bacteria.
