The STEAM education system will be put into effect before long in an effort to implement a rewarding learning experience with non-the oretical tasks, Education Minister Dr Susil Premajayantha said. The minister was speaking at a programme to foster the STEAM education system among students at the National Institute of Education (NIE).

This education method will take learners beyond classrooms to action-oriented pursuits, he said.

The STEAM education method was introduced by the National Science Foundation of the United States of America in 1999 as STEM, with the subjects of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This was later developed with arts subjects added.

Minister Premajayantha said most nations that have made use of the STEAM education system have been able to achieve a very high percentage of gross national income in no time.

“Owing to our slow-down in upgrading with such emerging approaches, the academic system of the entire country has been behind the curve over multiple decades,” he said.
